On 13th March, 1915, the 1st Middlesex battalion of 19 Brigade, then with 6th Division, moved into trenches running from Touquet to Rue du Bois near Armentières where they remained until relieved on 17th March. On 14th March, the day on which George Large was killed, the enemy carried out a lot of sniping throughout the day as well as firing rifle grenades at the positions held by 1st Middlesex. Ten of the battalion’s own bombs (grenades) were accidentally blown up resulting in further casualties. |
